This year, finally, I decided to brave sewing cosutmes instead of scrounging or buying something. Over a month ago I got the boys to agree to be pirates and picked up a fairly simple pattern from the fabric store. Everything was fine until I went to pick up the fabric.

THEN they tell me that they don't want to be pirates. My 6yo wants to be Captain Kirk and my 4yo wants to be Professor Moriarity from the Sherlock Hound series. Um, those are a bit beyond my capabilities right now. Finally, we agreed- 6yo would be Captain Kirk dressed as a pirate (he's going to make himself a communicator) and 4yo would be Professor Moriarity dressed as a pirate (he'll have a cape instead of pirate vest). Disaster averted and everyone's happy again.

Pirate shirts and sashes are made, vest and cape are cut and ready for sewing. As long as I get those done, the boys will be recognizeable pirates even if they have to wear regular pants underneath. Almost there!

Lottery Tickets

I bought a lottery ticket today. I hated to do it. The most I've ever gotten from a lotto ticket was three dollars back.

Today, though, it was all I could do to keep from panicking. I can't give myself a raise. I can't make my debt, poof!, go away. I can't postpone the inevitable student loan payments. But I found a dollar in a pair of jeans I haven't worn for a while, so I could buy a lottery ticket.

Now there's a chance I can get through this.

Right. All I've done is postponed my panic until Sunday when, wonder of wonders, I won't have won the lottery and I'll still not have the money for groceries, or car insurance, or the mortgage, or the credit card that's been hit with an overdraft fee.

Ah well, the dollar wouldn't have helped with any of those either, so there's no net loss.

Reading blogs again

My husband has been reading blogs again. Military blogs, like dreadcow, who is in Iraq now, and Sgt. Bohling, who was in Iraq and isn't any more.

He asked me if I minded. Minded? Why would I mind if he's finding out what it's really like in Iraq? I think it's important that Americans know what our soldiers in Iraq are dealing with. These soldiers will be coming home some day, and there's going to be some serious culture shock on both sides.

And, quite frankly, I'm glad he's finding out this sort of thing and sharing with me because, lazy bones that I am, I wouldn't find out any other way. Researching current events is not where I put my head when it's not busy with work or family.

So read away dear!
